Class of 1958 Virtual Zoom Gathering
Tuesday, June 2, 2026 at 5PM EDT, 2PM PDT

Our next Zoom meeting will be on June 2nd. Doug Weil suggested that we discuss changes to the Honor System that Princeton announced recently.

On May 13th, Christopher Moriarty, Professor of Ethics and Law at St. Petersburg College in Florida posted the following comment on LinkedIn, and we might use his post as a starting point for this conversation:

"For 133 years, Princeton banned exam proctors. Students' written pledge was considered enough. That era ended Monday, and AI is largely why.

"I spoke with Wall Street Journal reporter Douglas Belkin for his piece today on Princeton's decision to require proctors for the first time since 1893. Studies suggest about a third of students now admit to using AI to produce entire assignments, and the problem compounds: when students believe cheating is already widespread, the behavior starts to feel both more acceptable and more necessary to compete. That cycle puts real pressure on the credibility of the credentials at the center of higher education's value.

"As I told the Journal: at stake here is not just the soul of education, but the genuine development of critical thinking in the population. Would you go to a doctor who used AI throughout all of medical school? Would you hire a lawyer to defend you who used AI to take the bar exam?

"Princeton's decision is understandable, but proctors address a symptom. The harder question is what it takes to build institutional cultures where integrity is understood rather than just enforced."

For myself, I'll just add that the trust and responsibility that inhered in the honor system was a big part of my learning at Princeton. It taught the obligations of an adult learner as opposed to those of child. Adults are granted freedoms and held to obligations beyond those of a child.

A child may still lack a personal moral compass and, thus, has constant supervision. Adults are expected to have integrity and believe that the learning is more valuable than cheating to receive recognition that is not deserved and unearned.

Class wives are welcome to join us if they wish. It works best for wives to login from their own computers rather than trying to share a camera. And, of course, wives of departed class members are particularly welcome.

If any one has a topic that they would like to discuss just let us know at Secretary@Tiger58.org

Learning Forum

We were first organized as a class in Sepember 1954
to be a learning organization. We're still learning.

The Class Forum is our learning platform (see the menu bar above).  The  subforums give voice to the variety of interests and passions among our classmates. Let us hear from you.

Political Opinion is also welcome. Let us know what you think about how the nation and the world are evolving. We are stewards for the generations to follow us. How do you think we are doing?

Send material to Secretary@Tiger58.org so that it can be posted.
